Washington (Business Emerge), August 14: In a significant move to reinforce its alliance with Israel, the United States has approved a massive $20 billion sale of fighter jets and military equipment. Despite the urgency of Israel’s ongoing conflict in Gaza, the Pentagon has clarified that the delivery of these defense assets will not commence for several years.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken authorized the sale, which includes nearly $19 billion worth of F-15 fighter jets, alongside tank cartridges valued at $774 million, explosive mortar cartridges over $60 million, and army vehicles worth $583 million. The Pentagon highlighted that the production of Boeing’s F-15 jets will take time, with deliveries slated to begin in 2029, while other military equipment is expected to arrive as early as 2026.
The U.S. government has consistently emphasized its commitment to Israel’s security, considering it a crucial element of U.S. national interests. A Pentagon spokesperson stated, “The United States remains dedicated to ensuring Israel maintains a robust and prepared self-defense capability.”
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant expressed gratitude to U.S. officials, acknowledging their role in maintaining Israel’s “qualitative military edge in the region” through a post on social media platform X.
Since the onset of the Gaza conflict in October, the U.S., Israel’s primary ally and arms supplier, has delivered over 10,000 destructive bombs and thousands of Hellfire missiles. The conflict has taken a heavy toll on Gaza, leading to significant civilian casualties. In an attempt to prevent the escalation of violence, the U.S. has worked with regional mediators to negotiate a ceasefire, although these efforts have yet to yield results.
President Joe Biden proposed a three-phase ceasefire plan for Gaza on May 31, but despite diplomatic efforts, the plan has not been implemented. The latest surge in violence stems from an attack on Israel by the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas on October 7, resulting in the deaths of 1,200 people and the abduction of approximately 250 hostages, according to Israeli reports.
