Dhaka (Business Emerge), August 5:In a significant political upheaval, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned on Monday, sparking a chain of events that has led to the formation of an interim government. This decision comes amidst some of the most intense violence the country has seen since its independence over five decades ago.
Bangladesh has recently been embroiled in widespread protests and unrest. What began as student demonstrations against reservation quotas in government jobs escalated into a broader campaign demanding Hasina’s resignation. The unrest has resulted in approximately 250 fatalities and thousands of injuries, marking a critical period in the nation’s history.
Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman addressed the nation in a televised speech, confirming Hasina’s resignation and the establishment of an interim government. He also shared that he had engaged in “fruitful” discussions with leaders of all major political parties and planned to meet President Mohammed Shahabuddin to outline the next steps.
According to various reports, the 76-year-old Hasina, along with her sister, was flown out of the country via a military helicopter, heading towards India. Sources indicate she has landed in Agartala, the capital of Tripura state, which borders eastern Bangladesh.
This resignation marks the end of Hasina’s fourth consecutive term, secured in an election earlier this year that was boycotted by the opposition. The transition of power is expected to pave the way for a more stable political environment, as the interim government takes steps to restore order and address the demands of the protesting factions.
