Denmark (Business Emerge), July 25: Denmark is embarking on a new initiative to enhance the sustainability of camper van tourism, striving to convert these vehicles into a reliable and long-lasting economic asset.
The move aligns with the increasing trend among European nations addressing the challenges posed by tourism. Frequent disputes between local residents and camper van tourists over issues such as parking in scenic areas, obstructed views, and littering have prompted a shift towards improving the interaction between locals and visitors.
Peter Krusborg Pedersen, CEO of Visit Northwest Coast (Visit Nordvestkysten), describes the current situation as a ‘Wild West’ scenario due to the absence of clear regulations. He notes the uncertainty surrounding parking decisions, which complicates planning for tourists.
To address these concerns, Denmark is rolling out new regulations that will restrict parking in specific areas, enhance information for camper van users, and establish designated parking zones.
Tourism bodies, local authorities, and campgrounds are collaborating to ensure a positive experience for tourists while also benefiting the local economy and minimizing adverse impacts on communities.
VisitDenmark reported 2.3 million camper van overnight stays in 2022, with expectations for continued growth. The number of camper vans in Denmark has risen by 27% over the past five years, including a significant influx of international visitors.
In a contrasting approach to tourist management, Copenhagen is set to reward responsible behavior. Starting Monday, tourists who opt for cycling, use public transportation, or contribute to community tasks like gardening or waste collection in local parks will receive various incentives. Additionally, visitors bringing reusable coffee cups to certain locations can enjoy a complimentary coffee.
Mikkel Aarø-Hansen from Wonderful Copenhagen expressed the goal of finding effective solutions to foster a more harmonious relationship between tourists and the local community.
