Seoul (Business Emerge), September 6: Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida arrived in South Korea on Friday, aiming to solidify a renewed diplomatic relationship between the two nations. This visit comes as both countries prepare for upcoming leadership changes, with Kishida’s term nearing its end in September.
During the visit, Kishida and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol will hold discussions focused on expanding bilateral cooperation, particularly in areas like security and trade. South Korea has placed high importance on improving ties with Japan, especially to counter the military threats posed by North Korea. The talks are expected to address mutual efforts on international platforms and enhance border processing for travelers. There are also ongoing discussions regarding the evacuation of each other’s citizens during emergencies in third countries.
The diplomatic reconciliation between the two nations, which had been tense due to historical conflicts, has been strongly encouraged by U.S. President Joe Biden. Both Kishida and Yoon worked diligently to overcome past grievances, including Japan’s occupation of Korea from 1910 to 1945, and have since forged closer ties. A notable moment in their collaboration came during a trilateral summit with Biden at Camp David last year, where military and economic cooperation plans were set into motion. The United States is confident that Japan’s next leader will maintain these initiatives and strengthen the renewed alliance between the three countries.
Before his departure from Tokyo, Kishida expressed optimism about the future of Japan-South Korea relations, highlighting the considerable progress made during his term. “I want to review the improvements we’ve seen with President Yoon and discuss ways to ensure long-term cooperation,” he said. Kishida’s farewell visit underscores the significance of a partnership that will likely continue to shape the regional dynamics in East Asia for years to come.
Kishida is expected to return to Tokyo on Saturday, after concluding the summit with President Yoon.
